Hello 👋

Juan D. Pinto

I'm Juan, a data scientist building and evaluating reliable machine learning and AI systems
Researcher at heart 🧠 · builder in practice 🛠️ · lifelong learner 🌎

PhD data scientist with experience in education technology, assessment, and AI research. I build rigorous approaches to develop and evaluate machine learning and AI systems, measure product impact, and understand learner behavior.

What I do

Build, evaluate, and understand

I use data science, machine learning, and AI to help teams build useful systems, understand how they perform, and make better decisions about the people and products they serve.

01 · Build

Useful ML and AI systems

I work on machine learning models, LLM applications, retrieval-augmented systems, and agentic workflows that turn promising ideas into thoughtful, usable tools.

02 · Evaluate

Models, systems, and impact

I design evaluations that connect model quality, system behavior, and human judgment with product metrics and experiments—*all so teams can improve with evidence rather than guesswork.

03 · Understand

Behavior, impact, and opportunity

I use experimentation, causal inference, predictive modeling, and behavioral data to understand what changes outcomes and where products can better serve people.

* Em-dash by me, a human with prior editing experience.

Selected work

Research with practical purpose

My public work spans machine learning, reliable AI, behavioral modeling, and learning. These pieces offer a starting point for the questions I like to explore.

Interpretable neural networks

Designing neural models whose explanations are grounded in the way they actually make predictions.

A little more about me

A human-centered path into AI

I came to data science by way of ancient history, linguistics, learning experience design, and educational research. That path taught me to pay attention to how people make meaning and how to communicate complex ideas clearly.

Today, I bring those perspectives to data science, machine learning, and AI: combining rigorous methods with curiosity, creativity, and a desire to make technology more useful to real people.

Research

Curiosity, made useful

I've authored peer-reviewed work on interpretable AI, learner modeling, LLMs, and equitable educational technology. Research remains one of the ways I test ideas carefully and share what I learn. It also allows me to stay up to date with the latest advances in the field.

Outside work

Always learning something new

I grew up in Colombia 🇨🇴 but have spent most of my life in the United States. I speak Spanish and English, love dabbling in other languages, and enjoy noticing the variety of people and places around me.

When away from my keyboard, I'm usually paddleboarding with my kids, biking through central Illinois, looking for birds 🦜, or taking photographs along the way.
